Podcast instructions

Before you start:

*Each member should pick a question from the GoogleDoc to put to the group in Step 5. Make sure no members are picking the same question.

*If need be, find a room or other quiet space to record.

*Sit in a semi-circle with the computer you’re using to record facing you. Let quieter group members sit nearer to the computer.

*Do a test to make sure that you’re recording at a good volume.

Step 1. The host will introduce the group and very briefly explain the topic of conversation: learning about systemic poverty and antipoverty activism by volunteering at Cafe 180 and Same Cafe.

Step 2. One member will explain what SAME Cafe is and does, and one will do the same for Cafe 180. (You can use the articles we read about each to help.)

Step 3. The host will ask each member to share a particularly memorable experience from the day and what they learned from it. The group will discuss each memory, with all members contributing.

Step 4. Address John’s question: Charitable organizations seek to treat the symptoms of systemic injustice. Justice-oriented organizations seek to address the underlying causes — to change the system. Based on experiences and discussions you had on your volunteer day, how do you believe SAME Cafe and Cafe 180 seek real, justice-oriented change?

Step 5. The host will ask each member to put a question to the group. The group will discuss, with all members contributing. (The group should settle who’s asking which question beforehand.)

Step 6. A final question for all members: What’s a lesson about systemic poverty and antipoverty activism that you took away from your experience that you believe we can all benefit from?

Tips

Everyone: Remember that your audience isn't only the members of your group. You'll want explain yourself and to provide details and background for your ideas, so that people who aren't in our class and who weren't with you at the cafe -- or who haven't even heard of SAME and 180 -- will be able to learn from your discussion.

Everyone: Help the other members of the group! Respond to their observations, add your own, and ask them questions about what they say.

Everyone: You've got enough to talk about for a half-hour conversation at least. Longer is fine, but shorter isn't.

Hosts: Your job is to keep the conversation moving and to make sure everyone is participating and no one is dominating.

Editors: You have two main jobs:

1. Create the final mix by editing out any places where the group is talking about what to do next, rather than about the actual topic. (If you'd like to add music at the beginning or end, go ahead, but don't feel obligated.)
2. Upload the podcast to Google Drive as an MP3 file, share it with me, and send me the link.
