Map-making project

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be making a map of organizations in Denver that are fighting against poverty and for economic justice: these organizations might be local non-profits (like homeless shelters and food banks), local political advocacy groups (like Healthier Colorado, where SJ alum Melanie Kesner works), or local grassroots organizations (like the CO chapter of new Poor People’s Campaign). Basically, the idea is to create a map of local opportunities for ourselves to join the struggle against economic injustice — places you might decide to volunteer your time and energy in the years to come.

Your job now is to do some internet research to find a local org that interests you, and then (a) mark it on our Google Map with a pushpin and (b) include with that pushpin a link, a brief description of the org, and, if you like, a photo or video. Make sure you’re not doubling up on orgs that someone else has already added to the map.

I’ve put up a few pins myself — for the Saint Francis Center, the Harm Reduction Action Center, SAME Cafe, and Healthier Colorado — so that you have examples of how to do it.

The map is here, and a 1-minute tutorial on how to collaborate on Google Maps is here. Your contribution to the map is due the day you’ve signed up to make a one-minute presentation on our org in class. The presentation is simple: just tell us about what the org does, why you think it’s cool, and how people can volunteer.

Presentation slots are filling up fast, so sign up now!
